Principal's Message

By Mr. Matthew Lerner, Elmwood Elementary School Principal

Elmwood Panther Community,

We are excited to begin our 6th year as a team for the Elmwood Panthers! This year will be unlike any other in the past 100 years of Elmwood Elementary, as our $55 million dollar referendum and construction project comes to a close. During the summer of 2022, the entire first floor was renovated which brought us a new media center, courtyard, classrooms, breakout areas, and main office area. This summer we are renovating and redoing the second floor to include all new classrooms, breakout rooms, 2 hubs (large learning spaces), and workspace for the teachers. We are beyond excited to show everyone the finished product and allow for our students to be in a 21st-century learning environment.

Our mission at Elmwood Elementary is: “We will meet the needs of every student academically, socially and emotionally.”

We are excited to start a new math curriculum this year called Bridges. This new program will allow for more student interactions and hands-on activities to allow our students. We also currently use ReadyGen for our literacy curriculum and StemScopes for our Science curriculum. Our amazing staff will continue to educate the students at Elmwood and ensure they have a successful experience.

We also spend time with students on their social/emotional learning. Our teachers and staff foster relationships with our students to ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities as learners at Elmwood Elementary as well as allow them to grow as great citizens of Elmwood Park. Weekly students build social/emotional skills using our Second Step program.  This program focuses on building positive relationships, problem-solving, managing emotions, and setting goals.

Elmwood Elementary is a bully-free zone. We take all information about bullying and cyberbullying seriously. Please call the school if a problem arises, or you can complete this form and it will be sent to the administration. If you see or hear something, say something! We are a Safe2Help school. This program will offer students a safe and confidential way to share information that may help prevent suicides, bullying, school violence and other threats to student safety.

We have an outstanding parent organization! They do many events and fundraising throughout the year for our school and students. Please complete this link to become a member of the PATT for the 2023-24 school year. We look forward to you joining our team to help make Elmwood the best school we can be.

We invite you to explore our website to learn more about Elmwood Elementary, our programs, our faculty, and our achievements. Whether you are a prospective family, a current student or parent, or simply interested in learning more about our school, we hope you find the information you need and get a sense of the warm and inclusive atmosphere that defines our school community.

Assistant Principal Ms. Stephanie Hagins and I are excited to begin our 6th year at Elmwood Elementary. Throughout the year, we will hold several parent and community events, so please be on the lookout for those dates. You may also visit our website often as we will be adding updates, and you can also follow us on Twitter — @ew401_panthers — if you would like to see pictures, announcements and other important school information.

Go Panthers!
