From the Principal's Desk

Thank you for all of your flexibility and cooperation during our e-learning days. We appreciate how quickly our teachers, parents and students were able to pivot to an online delivery model. Great job Elmwood School!

We have a few great events coming up in the next few days. We are excited to host the Elm Cougars and their 6/7th grade boys basketball team as well as the 8th-grade boys basketball teams for their playoff run! On Monday, the 8th-grade boys team play at 4 pm in our gym! On Tuesday, the 6/7th boys team plays their home playoff game at 4 pm at Elmwood! Come support some of our former Panthers!

Our PATT meeting which was postponed due to the weather is upcoming. Please plan on attending on Tuesday, January 23rd at 6 PM in our cafeteria if you would like to volunteer or give suggestions for our fun fair. This event is a favorite for all of our students and families, and volunteering for it is a great way to get involved. We hope to see you there!

On Friday, the students will attend an assembly called The NED Show, it is a character education program that centers around three important messages that have lifelong relevance: Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best. During the assembly, students will learn about the importance of these three life skills while also enjoying storytelling, magic, humor and yo-yo tricks.

Students are also taking their winter NWEA MAP assessment this week and next week. This is the same assessment they took in the fall, and parents will be reported so you can see how their child is growing in reading and math. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher, or discuss it with them at our upcoming parent-teacher conferences.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you!

Mr. Lerner & Mrs. Hagins

NED Show

On Friday, January 26th our school will participate in the NED show assembly. This school-wide character education program centers around a 45-minute assembly called The NED Show. NED is a loveable cartoon character whose name is an acronym for Never Give Up, Encourage Others, and Do your best. Teachers love that NED is simple, relatable and kid-focused. The presenter uses yo-yo tricks to entertain students while teaching the principles of never giving up, encouraging others and doing your best. Yo-yos will be for sale before school outside of the main office from 8:20-8:35 AM starting on Monday, January 29th- Friday, February 2nd.

ACCESS Letter

To the Parents and Guardians of Students Who are English Language Learners,

Your student is required to take an exam called ACCESS- Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners. The ACCESS exam is an annual English language proficiency test that measures students’ academic English language.

When registering your child, if you marked YES on the Home Language Survey that your child speaks another language or another language is spoken at home, they are required to take ACCESS for ELs (English Learners). Even if you refuse language services and your child is not in an EL class/program, we are required to monitor all student's language progress and proficiency.

A language proficiency level is a measurement of where students are in the ongoing process of building language skills. When students reach a high level of language proficiency, 4.8 or above, they are no longer required to take this exam or receive language services. We assure you that this is not reflected in their grades, nor will it affect their current classroom placement.

Students in EPCUSD401 will be testing throughout January and February. Your child's school will communicate what their testing schedule is. It is very important that each student comes to school on time and is prepared for their school’s testing dates. It is also essential that each student do the best they can on the ACCESS so that our districts, statewide, can properly serve them in the 2023-2024 school year.

For your information:

• ACCESS for ELs is primarily a computer-based format.

• Kindergarten ACCESS for ELs is administered individually using stories and activities to keep young learners engaged.

• Alternate ACCESS for ELs is a test that support teams can elect to use for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. It offers extra support and gives students multiple opportunities to respond to test items.

We appreciate your continued cooperation and support. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
